networking passwords

It'd be nice if you could easily add passwords to networked folders. I've heard that you can do this with Windows XP, but the process is very difficult--especially if you're using home edition.
It'd be nice if on the properties tab "Sharing" it had a little checkbox for a password, and if you checked it, you'd have to enter a password to open the folder if you were on another computer.
Also, it'd be nice if you then logged into a user account on another computer with exactly the same name and password, you wouldn't have to re-type the password. However, other user log-ons would.

because it is not working! Everything is good on my network: Vista PC can reach my shared folders but I can not get anything from its Public folder (shared by default). I have IP addresses fixed and can see the Vista PC on My Network places but when try to click it I got the message: You have not rights etc ..!!! Enjoy anyway!

We don't directly support adding passwords to shared folders. But you can achieve a similar effect if you create an account that has a password, then share the folder to that account. Anyone who wants to access the folder over the network just needs to know the user name and password for that folder.
For your second suggestion, this should already work. If you have accounts on two different computers with the same user name and password then sharing should be seamless. For example, user Foo password Bar exists on computers A and B. Share a folder on computer A to Foo. Log into computer B as Foo. From computer B you can open that shared folder on computer A without entering a new user name and password. The system will use the user account and password you are currently logged in as whenever possible. If you try to access a different folder on computer A that Foo didn't have permissions to then you would have to enter a user name and password.

Could you explain this process more thoroughly? How do I share a folder to a certain account?

1. Create a user account on the computer that has the files you want to share. Set a password for the account. You can skip this step if the person you want to share with already has an account on this computer. 2. Right click->Share the files or folders you want to share over the network.
Sharing Wizard 3. For most folders the sharing wizard will open up. 4. Type in the name of the person you want to share with (or the name of the account you just created). 5. Click add. 6. Click share. 7. On the last page of the wizard you can send an email that has links to the files you just shared.
XP Sharing 3. For some folders the sharing property page will open. 4. Click the "Advanced Sharing" button. 5. Check the box to share the folder. 6. Click on the permissions button. 7. Click remove to remove the everyone group 8. Click add 9. Type in the name of the account you want to share to 10. Assign the permissions you want this user to have. 11. Click ok on all the dialogs.
